Past and present.

It was a few days before I fully recovered from the virus and could start my work. But when I did, It was not what I expected at first. As the weeks passed, nothing really interesting happened, the days dragged on, with no sign of improvement. Until..... One day.... it all changed

I was near the edge of the forest, as I passed it every day several times I did not take much notice normally. However today, something made me stop.

Deep within the trees, I could hear a distant female scream. I didn't hesitate, I ran straight into the woods to attempt to save whoever was in danger. Rushing past trunks, branches and bushes, my legs powered me forwards as fast as they could towards the person who was crying out.

I could see light approaching, signalling a clearing was ahead, so I sped up. Then I began to slow as I saw what was wrong. I stopped dead in my tracks and starred at what I was seeing.

In the clearing, cowering next to a tree was a light pink furred Rena Digimon like me. She was cornered buy a small juvenile Green Seadramon. It was baring its fangs and hissing at the kitsune who had already been injured. Blood was dripping from a small wound on her left leg, leaving a red stain down her white fur.

She needed my help, so I ran out in front of the serpent and blocked him from attacking her further. He released a deep, vibrating growl which painfully shook my insides for a few seconds. Before I recovered he lashed his tail around, tripping me over to my side.

Regaining my composure quickly I returned with some mock charges on him, surging forwards then pulling back. He backed away a few meters before lunging forwards and snapped his jaws only a few inches from my nose.

Then I actually struck him. A single swipe of my claws across his maw, I left three deep gash marks across his eye area. Letting out a high pitched screech, the snake shook his head around and retreated into the forest.

I stood there for a few moments snarling at it, forcing it to back away faster. Then I turned around, the pink vixen was still sitting there, but she was still trembling. I slowly walked towards her but she backed away.

"Don't be frightened, I only want to help you" I quietly said.

This didn't help as she then turned and ran, she scaled a nearby tree and disappeared into the canopy. Despite her wounded leg, she had some astonishing speed and agility, far superior to mine.

After this I began to walk back towards the edge of the woods, where I had entered. Still thinking about whom this Digimon was, I wondered why she had not approached our village. Why was she so reluctant to even be near her own kind?

I decided it was best to just ignore it and continue what I was doing; I had not injured myself and potentially drove away a Green Seadramon. I thought that day was a very successful day so, not being modest, I thought I would boast about it at dinner time.

This was a bad idea.

As we sat around the fireplace, Vulpy asked me how I got on today, so I told her the whole story. She lost her smile afterwards and said "You left our territory and went into the forest?"

I hesitated and admitted "Yes, I did..."

"Nobody besides Ravickmon is allowed to leave the territory alone" she snapped.

"The Digimon I saw needed help" I replied.

"That was a very brave thing to do, but very foolish" Hielo added.

"What if the Digimon you were saving was also dangerous?" Vulpy asked.

I sighed and looked down "I thought you might have been proud of me..."

"I'm proud that you wanted to help, but not that you disobeyed the rules" she said.

The next few days, I didn't say much to anyone, I just continued to do my work in silence. One day I decided to stop by the lake for a while for a break, so I sat down on a rock and rested. As I basked in the sunlight I could hear rustling in the nearby bushes. At first I shrugged it off but it continued on for a short time before I heard a girl whimpering.

I stood up and walked towards where it was coming from, pushing the leaves aside I was surprised to see what it was.

"You again?" I said as the pink Rena looked up at me. She had fear in her eyes.

Much to my surprise she ran around and hid behind my back. For the first time she spoke and said "Hide me" in a very quiet voice.

I was about to ask why but then we heard more rustling followed by a slight cackle. She cowered behind me as I heard a creaking sound.

The water on the lake near where we were standing began to freeze over. Then, from the bushes, appeared a Blue Meramon. Covered from head to toe in icy flames and with piercing yellow eyes, he was not a pleasant sight. However, he was on our territory and was clearly frightening the kitsune who was hiding behind me.

He walked over to us and said "Hiding behind your friend won't save you my pretty"

"Back off!" I barked. "You have no right to be tormenting her or to be in this area"

"Is that so?" he asked menacingly as the ground beneath our feet turned to near sheet ice.

The Meramon glided across the ground and skated around us saying "Your little friend is scared of me? How touching"

"Not moving or even looking at him I said "If you don't stop bullying her, I will be forced to drive you away myself"

"Don't make me laugh" he chuckled. "That pink fluff ball is weaker than a new hatchling. What makes you think you are stronger?"

"You are trying my patience" I snarled.

"What are you going to do? Run away crying like her?" he mocked.

"I'm giving you to the count of three to get lost" I warned him.

"Try me" he replied.

"One........ Two.......... THREE!" I shouted and then charged straight for him.

I did not have much grip on the ice so I was rather clumsy on my feet; he however simply glided along without a problem. After several failed attempts at striking I slipped and fell onto my side, I recovered and lunged at him again.

Before I could reach him he slammed a fist into the ground and forced a wall of ice up in front of me. Unable to stop I slammed directly into it and pushed it to the ground. As I lay upon the sheet of frozen water I felt my arms and legs lock in place, the wall has shackled me down.

"That was too easy" he scoffed. "Now, since you're sitting there, you can watch"

"Leave her alone!" I snapped.

"Or what, you will slip over and make me laugh again?" he joked.

"That's it!" I shouted and pulled hard at the ice. I broke free and stood upright "You have made me angry, and now you will see what happens when you make a Kitsune angry"

I leaped into the air, and for the first time ever, I used my special powers in battle.

"Diamond STORM!!!"

I sent a dozen shards racing towards him. He backed off but the small explosion from the shards sent him flying back several feet. He stood up and said "I will be back for her!"

He turned and ran back into the bushes, leaving me to help a very frightened Digimon. I walked over and knelt beside her to try and comfort her "You're safe now"

"thank you" she quietly said.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"um.... quartzmon" she said so quietly it was almost impossible to tell what it was.

"Quartzmon?.... That's a nice name" I said as I helped her to her feet.

I lead her back towards the village and consoled her more. Her leg still had a small scar from when I had first seen her but it had healed nicely. She was not much shorter than me, rather thin from lack of food and very weak. She was in a bad way.

"Let's get you home and looked after" I offered.

"ok" she said. Her voice was higher than mine and always seemed to be quiet.

As we approached the village, Sapphire was the first to notice us. She ran over to us, which seemed to startle Quartz as she was obviously very shy. "Don't worry, she is a friend of mine" I reassured her.

She nodded and continued to walk; Sapphire came up to me and asked "Who is this?"

"The one I saw in the forest, she was by the lake being attacked again" I responded.

We helped her back to my hut and laid her down in my nest. She bunched up some straw and used it as a pillow as we brought her some bread and water. She nibbled on the crust and thanked us before I asked "Where did you come from?"

"I don't want to talk about it" she said.

"You should, It will make you feel better" I replied.

She sighed and said "Ok, fine, if you really want to know...... I will tell you"
